However, this shift from traditional employment arrangements has also created a unique set of psychological and economic challenges. Economic stressors such as income volatility, lack of health and retirement benefits, job insecurity, and limited legal protections significantly influence gig workers’ mental health outcomes. These stressors in Gig Economy Mental Health have been linked to chronic stress responses, depressive symptoms, anxiety disorders, and reduced overall well-being, particularly for individuals who rely solely on gig work for their livelihoods. Drawing on research from industrial-organizational psychology, occupational health psychology, and labor economics, this article examines the interplay between precarious employment conditions and mental health in the gig economy. It synthesizes empirical evidence from global studies, discusses the role of platform-mediated work in shaping psychological risk factors, and highlights the disproportionate burden experienced by marginalized populations. The article also explores organizational and policy implications, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based interventions to mitigate economic pressures and promote mental health equity for gig workers worldwide.
Introduction
The rise of the gig economy reflects a paradigm shift in employment structures, fueled by advances in digital technology, globalization, and the growing demand for flexible work arrangements. Digital labor platforms, such as Uber, Upwork, DoorDash, and Fiverr, have disrupted traditional employer-employee relationships, giving rise to a new category of workers who operate as independent contractors rather than salaried employees (De Stefano, 2016). While gig work offers benefits such as flexible schedules, geographic independence, and opportunities for entrepreneurial growth, it also introduces unprecedented instability and psychological strain. Scholars have argued that these employment arrangements constitute a form of precarious work that prioritizes flexibility for businesses while transferring economic risks to workers (Kalleberg & Dunn, 2016).
Economic instability is one of the defining characteristics of the gig economy, with workers often experiencing unpredictable income, inconsistent demand, and an absence of employer-provided benefits (Wood et al., 2019). This volatility undermines workers’ sense of security, a core psychological need identified in industrial-organizational psychology as fundamental to employee well-being (Deci & Ryan, 2000). Gig workers frequently lack access to health insurance, paid time off, and retirement contributions, which can exacerbate stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. Studies have documented a correlation between precarious employment conditions and negative mental health outcomes, including heightened psychological distress and burnout (Kim & von dem Knesebeck, 2016; Paul & Moser, 2009).
The growth of gig work has been particularly pronounced during economic downturns and public health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional employment opportunities declined, and many workers turned to gig platforms for supplemental or primary income (Dubal, 2020). While these platforms have provided critical financial lifelines, they have also created environments characterized by uncertainty, algorithmic oversight, and limited worker bargaining power. These factors have prompted researchers to call for more comprehensive studies that explore the interplay between economic stressors, psychological outcomes, and systemic inequalities in gig work. Industrial-organizational psychology, with its emphasis on work design, employee well-being, and organizational policies, offers valuable frameworks for addressing these challenges (Parker et al., 2017).
Understanding the mental health consequences of gig work is crucial for several reasons. First, gig work represents an increasing proportion of global labor markets, with estimates suggesting that digital labor platforms may employ more than 200 million workers worldwide (International Labour Organization, 2021). Second, mental health challenges among gig workers are not merely individual concerns but have broader economic implications, as psychological distress can reduce work performance, increase attrition rates, and create long-term public health burdens. Finally, identifying evidence-based interventions for mitigating economic stressors aligns with global calls for sustainable work practices and labor protections in the 21st-century economy.
The Landscape of Gig Work and Mental Health
Gig work is not a monolithic experience but rather a spectrum of employment types that vary in job demands, autonomy, and income potential. On-demand platform work, such as ridesharing and food delivery, is often characterized by low wages, high physical demands, and algorithmic management systems that dictate worker behavior (Rosenblat & Stark, 2016). Conversely, knowledge-intensive gig work, such as freelance consulting or software development, may offer greater autonomy and earning potential but also involves competitive pressures, unstable project pipelines, and the need for constant self-marketing (Kuhn & Maleki, 2017). This variability makes it essential to distinguish between different categories of gig work when analyzing mental health outcomes.
Despite these differences, many gig workers face common economic vulnerabilities. Income volatility is a pervasive challenge, with earnings subject to fluctuations in market demand, platform pricing strategies, and customer ratings. Research indicates that financial uncertainty is strongly associated with increased psychological distress, as workers struggle to predict future earnings or plan for essential expenses such as housing and healthcare (Berg, 2016). Unlike traditional employees, gig workers typically lack legal entitlements to unemployment insurance or employer-provided benefits, further compounding the stress associated with financial insecurity (Mishel & McNicholas, 2019).
Algorithmic management, a hallmark of many gig platforms, introduces additional psychological stressors. Workers are often subject to opaque algorithms that determine job allocation, compensation, and performance evaluations, reducing their sense of autonomy and control over their work (Lee et al., 2015). The unpredictability of algorithmic decision-making can create a state of hyper-vigilance among workers, as their livelihood is tied to performance metrics they cannot fully understand or influence. Studies in organizational behavior have shown that a lack of autonomy and predictability in work environments is associated with decreased job satisfaction, emotional exhaustion, and increased risk of burnout (Bakker & Demerouti, 2017).
The erosion of traditional employment protections also has long-term implications for mental health. Gig workers often operate outside the scope of labor laws designed to safeguard employee well-being, such as minimum wage regulations, anti-discrimination policies, and occupational health standards (De Stefano, 2016). This lack of institutional support can create a climate of vulnerability, where workers feel isolated and unsupported, contributing to elevated rates of stress and psychological strain. Moreover, because gig workers are classified as independent contractors, they bear the full financial burden of occupational hazards, workplace injuries, and job-related stress, exacerbating economic and psychological risks.
These economic stressors intersect with broader societal inequities. Women, immigrants, and racial minorities are disproportionately represented in low-paying gig sectors, where they experience both economic precarity and heightened exposure to discrimination (Van Doorn, 2017). For these populations, gig work can perpetuate cycles of inequality, as systemic barriers limit access to stable employment, healthcare, and mental health resources. Research in occupational health psychology emphasizes that marginalized workers are more likely to encounter chronic stressors, which can lead to cumulative negative health outcomes over time (Cottini & Lucifora, 2013). Economic stressors in gig work environments trigger a range of psychological mechanisms that influence workers’ mental health outcomes. Central to this discussion is the transactional model of stress and coping, which conceptualizes stress as the result of an individual’s appraisal of environmental demands and their perceived ability to meet those demands (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Gig workers’ exposure to unpredictable income streams, algorithmic oversight, and a lack of institutional protections often leads to negative appraisals, as workers perceive limited control over their employment conditions. This sense of uncontrollability has been strongly linked to elevated cortisol levels, disrupted sleep, and a heightened risk of depression and anxiety (Peckham et al., 2020).

Research also highlights the role of uncertainty intolerance, a personality trait associated with heightened distress in unpredictable environments, as a moderator of gig economy mental health outcomes (Carleton, 2016). Gig workers with low tolerance for uncertainty may experience more severe stress responses, as the unpredictable nature of their work exacerbates feelings of insecurity. Conversely, workers with high adaptability and resilience may perceive some aspects of gig work as less stressful, illustrating the importance of individual differences in shaping psychological outcomes. However, while personal traits play a role, structural vulnerabilities remain significant drivers of mental health disparities, emphasizing the need for systemic interventions.

Industrial-organizational psychology emphasizes the importance of designing work systems that balance flexibility with security, which is essential for fostering long-term mental health among gig workers (Parker et al., 2017). Future research should examine how multilevel interventions, combining individual resilience training with organizational and policy reforms, can create sustainable improvements in mental health outcomes for this growing workforce.
Organizational and Policy Interventions to Support Gig Economy Mental Health
